Half seeing, half knowing

Choosily pick your clothes, plan and count them. Where's my bag again? Under the bed? In the store? Ooo, in my closet. We dilly-dally with yogurt and sauce. Fiddle with unnecessary oddities this child of a house produces. Finally, our shoes are on, you're walking out the door but opps, I've forgotten my charger. Retrieve it, quick.. now N's on the piano..I wasn't that quick. A quiet sitting in the corner of our lounge beckons him. He gets up to leave and almost makes it. Ring! A call to delay. There's no coordinating on this Friday. We like it all the more.

At last, we zoom over to D's. Toot at him to say hurry and speed off to be caught in the predictable evening jam we always so wishfully hope isn't. On a detour at the petrol station, we find our weekend about to change. Unexpectedly, N's mobile tells him C is in town! On a spontaneous decision of both parts, we head to Beach Haven and now four completes the car.

After a pit stop at Sylvia Park for essentials, we at very last hit the road. Between banter and snores, we sway up and down the hills into Pauanui. Fortunately for us and anything that defines 'road kill', we arrive safely without the taint of N's tyres.

Stretching my way out, everything is a quiet black and the wind is wispy. Goosebumps start to appear just as the flicker of light inside warms the outside. We are here! Woohoos and yays carry on as we unload the strangely startling amount of food we've brought! Yes, the gross amount was necessary.

Minutes later, the wine glasses are out and the ciders are kept to chill. A variety of sips on, we decide on a beach walk and play with the idea of a midnight swim. Now, it's autumn. Though the crossover was recent, the water goes by some other rule. I like to think anyway. And with the recent shark attack...

In the dark we stumble and chatter with clattering teeth (mine anyway), finding our way to that familiar path (for some) to the beach. From the road, suddenly we turn right and walk along. Pass the trees on our right, pass the fences on the left. Steady now, continue on. The road diverges, we take another turn. We walk, walk.. skip. After some time, the path widens, it clears and leads to the moon. I've always said I could live in the sea. I wish I could. I would alternate between each sea creature. Experiencing everything, how selfish.

Silence in the atmosphere is broken by more ridiculous ideas. The high tide sweeps on up  greeting our bare feet. The sand is so lovely and cold. Like course silk beneath us, going on forever. The sea is so inviting in its deep dark ways, so peaceful, and just like that, D carefully lays things for safekeeping on the sand and does the inevitable on our minds. The brave one.

Emerging back on shoreline, he says it makes him feel alive and we simply carry on westward, not saying a word.
